Welcome to Natural World Facts. I'm Leo, a Marine Biology undergraduate student with a passion for the natural world, a fascination with the deep sea, and a dream of working in the field of science-communication. This channel began as a passion project when I was 8 years old. Now, more than 10 years later, I'm still releasing fortnightly videos documenting a number of natural history topics, and I invite you to join me on my journey to discover all there is to know about our incredible planet.
Be sure to subscribe to be notified when I release a new video, and most importantly, enjoy. I hope you learn something new :)

Written, narrated and edited by me, Leo Richards. This channel (Natural World Facts) is my passion project dedicated to exploring the wonders of the natural world and telling stories that inspire! This film is unusual in that it is my first piece of contract work, commissioned by Schmidt Ocean Institute, who have kindly given me permission to post it here on UA-cam - so the style might seem a little different to usual, but I had a blast making it. The film premiered at the Royal Institution in London. See the film's outro for full credits. Thank you to everyone at SOI who recorded the footage, gave interviews, piloted the ROV, kept the ship running, and managed a boat-load (literally) of media and footage to make this film possible!
Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) is a non-profit oceanographic research foundation that has been pioneering deep-sea research and discovery since 2009, on board their old vessel RV Falkor and their new RV Falkor (too). Their remotely operated vehicle (ROV) SuBastian is equipped with a suite of sensors and a 4K camera that has illuminated the depths and live-streamed dives around the world. Most footage shown is filmed and provided by SOI. Check out their website: schmidtocean.org/

The Whisper of the Woods

I shot this on location in the UK's New Forest National Park, a haven of wild heaths and ancient woodlands, sheltering an oasis of wildlife. I visit the woods quite often - once a week, if I'm able - but year by year I can see the biodiversity wane. This short film aims to highlight the issue of habitat and biodiversity loss in the UK due to industrialisation, climate issues, and pollution. It ...

Robots in the Deep Sea (ft. Schmidt Ocean Institute)
Переглядів 212 тис.2 роки тому
Exploring life in the deep-ocean midwater is a long-standing challenge for deep-sea research. The region between the surface and sea-floor, a space that constitutes the largest most biodiverse habitat on Earth, remains poorly understood due to the limitations of sampling its gelatinous, fragile inhabitants. Robots in the Deep documents recent innovations that allow midwater animals to be sample...

Hellooo, environmental science student here! What a wondeful video to relax after exam season. <3
God loves you beautiful angel
I just want more of this on my page. My lanta
I’m so lost still lol
🤍
The host does have newt scamander vibes❤
Your voice is incredibly soothing and it is the perfect guide through the amazing voyage to the abyss ✨ thank you for your wonderful work
Lower the intensity of the music! This isn't MTV! Narration is good, but music distracts from it.
I LOVE WHALE FALLS!!! HOW SOMETHING PASSING CREATES SUCH A LIVELY ECOSYSTEM WHEN ITS USUALLY SO EMPTY DOWN THERE AHHH
I watched real life drama, true crime contents, got overwhelmed and here i am.
Very good video, I enjoy watching it
Does anyone know what the isopod-like critter at 7:02 is?
64 years now not 85 years bobo!
How are they not crushed?
how can the creatures resist the pressure? is the air in them under that much force?
Amazing video and informative too
Deep ocean

Rubbish is everywhere
The eye make me scary 😱😱😱
awesome documentary but nobody really knows how any of these deep sea animals live.. in my eyes it all a guess.. still awesome none the less and also no light penetrates the depths
beyond the sea, is voice girl or boy, 😮
You are a poet
Great coverage of a fascinating topic. Multiple types of life assemble at a source for a sustainable existence at deep sea hydrothermal vents. We look at these helpless creatures as vulnerable to any changes in their environment. When considering the universe as our ocean I often think of how like these creatures we are. Huddled together competing for the resources on our own vent in the universe. Earth. 🌎
I love your videos! They're so detailed and I love the technical definitions. But, I wanted to let you know that many of your videos have blurred scenes. It's really distracting and it's so disappointing when a blurred scene comes up and I can't see what you're talking about.
🇵🇱😖
Well done my friend.
Seeing their cute little goofy eyes brings the horror out of the picture slightly
Bros gotta pronounce every word differently
Yes bro does
6:38 Is that a toilet cleaner brush on the end of the arm of the ROV?
Yes I think it was 💩
Yup!! Not all science requires special high tech equipment. If it works, it works. This specific case involves using the bristles to trigger the squid’s ‘autotomy’, AKA ejection of the tentacle tips, a method of tissue (and thus, DNA) collection far less intrusive than removing and killing the animal. And yes, the tips grow back. It’s a defence mechanism, just like lizards ejecting tails.
@@NaturalWorldFacts Wow, thank you for the info!
No worries :D
Was gonna subscribe but y’all censor your videos, and a channel calling itself “Natural World Facts” should be giving us the facts of the natural world. Not censoring shark feeding videos, on a dead whale mind you. How is that even offensive? Even if one makes the argument of not wanting to show a “hunt” for whatever dumb reason, ok fine, but this whale is dead, nothing happening in the ol’ brain pan. Insane
Blame youtube for the censorship. I agree with you wholeheartedly.
@@NaturalWorldFacts accept I won’t because other channels show it no problem. I should say I won’t fully blame them. It’s because you want to make money off the video. Therefore, you also bare responsibility. Nothing wrong with that, just do not place all fault with UA-cam.
@user-om7ft2ms8r Nope - it was because someone reported the video as graphic. It was blur the scenes, or delete the film. Nothing else I can do. I don’t think any of it should be blurred - nature is nature
@@NaturalWorldFacts my apologies friend, I do not have enough wisdom in how all that works with being a creator. I stand corrected and wish you well, we will part in peace friend with no ill will.
@user-om7ft2ms8r Thank you :) and it’s alright, most of it’s all still an enigma to me too haha! Thanks for dropping by anyway - if you do happen to check out my newer stuff, let me know what you think. It’s quite a different style - more cinematic than video essay - and no blurry bits haha!
תודה רבה על הסרטון! 🇮🇱
Just wanted to say your content has helped me so much over the years. Thank you so much. ❤
